Syngenta introduces new sugarbeet varieties

Three new Hilleshög varieties are announced for the Red River Valley and southern Minnesota.

Syngenta has introduced five new new Hilleshög brand sugarbeet hybrids. Three are for the Red River Valley and southern Minnesota for 2017.

Varieties for the American Crystal Sugar Co., and a description of its characteristics, provided by Syngenta, are:

  • HIL9707: Strong performance in company trials, strong aphanomyces tolerance, Cercospora, moderate fusarium tolerance, good emergence, root yield, sugar content and sugar purity
  • HIL9708: Excellent yield and sugar content potential, Rhizoctonia tolerance, strong emergence

The variety for the Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Co-op, and a description of its traits, provided by Syngenta, is:

  • HIL9739: Stacked with multiple disease traits, great cercospora tolerance, great sugar content, revenue per acre, sugar purity, good emergence, root yield

“Hilleshög offers high-performing sugarbeet hybrids with key disease traits to meet the challenges of each unique growing area,” says Tyler Ring, sugarbeet portfolio head, Syngenta. “Our hybrid portfolio is the result of innovative R and D practices, which include localized disease screening, breeding, hybrid selection and technology evaluation at specially designed facilities throughout the beet growing regions of the U.S. This leads to a more consistent on-farm experience year after year.”

To help ensure optimum root health, strong stands and maximum yield potential, seed protection is critical, Ring says. Quality seed treatments for sugarbeets help prevent the spread of plant diseases and keep insects at bay, and increase root mass and seedling vigor from day one. Seed treatments such as Syngenta’s CruiserMaxx Sugarbeets seed treatment insecticide/fungicide, a combination of separately registered products; Vibrance seed treatment fungicide; or Clariva seed treatment nematicide will help growers achieve comprehensive root health and minimize damage from yield-robbing pests and diseases, he says.
